Description

Disproportionate representation in discipline practices (race/ethnicity and students with disabilities) is one of the most significant problems in education today (Gregory, Skiba, & Noguera, 2010; U.S. Government Accountability Office, 2013). This workshop will explore ways to address the disproportionality of students who are disciplined by suspensions, expulsion, and referrals to law enforcement by introducing a five-point multi-component approach. This workshop will support educators in providing safe, effective, and positive learning environments for students, thereby improving their overall learning and academic achievement.

Prerequisite: Participants should investigate state and national resources/guidance related to school discipline and “School to Prison Pipeline” and state-level discipline data disaggregated by race/ethnicity and disability (available on www.cde.state.co.us/pbis website).

Audience: School and district personnel whose role it is to support school discipline (e.g. Administrators, Deans, Special Educators, Mental Health Providers, Counselors, PBIS Coaches, etc.)

Expected Learner Outcomes: Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Understand key federal and state legislative factors related to school discipline,

2. Utilize a multi-tiered behavioral framework (PBIS) for school discipline

3. Investigate disaggregated student discipline data,

4. Recognize and identify personal Vulnerable Decision Points, and

5. Identify and apply alternative strategies to keep students engaged and connected to school
